Twitter launches Vine for the Web

Twitter today launched Vine for the Web. The service is available now: just head to vine and login with your Vine account.
The new site lets users browse their home feed, view videos in full screen TV mode, as well as like, comment, and share Vines. You can also visit your favorite users’ Vine profiles, and share your own with others so they can see your posts.

All the features listed above are already available in Vine’s mobile apps, except for the TV mode. That one is exclusive to the Web.
You can enable it by hitting a button in the upper right corner of your feed or any profile. This will switch you to a new view to show you the collection of videos in sequence and in full screen:

Twitter promises today’s launch is just version 1.0 and that users should thus expect new features. “This release is just a first step toward bringing you a richer, more enjoyable web experience,” the company says. “We look forward to introducing more improvements in 2014.”
Vine for the Web is all about consumption: you currently can’t record videos with your webcam nor can you upload videos you have already taken. It’s not clear if Twitter wants to keep Vine focused on mobile or try to bring its apps and the Web version to feature parity. Either way, the site seems to be a good first release.
The new Vine site is a perfect example of how services are now being developed on mobile first, and then brought over to other devices. Twitter clearly hopes the strategy will help to keep Vine growing, even if most users will likely stick to the mobile apps exclusively.
